You are known for your speed and your attacking runs from the right wing. What goes through your mind when you see an empty space in front of you?
The moment I see open space in front of me, my mind immediately goes into attack mode, thinking about carrying the ball forward, using my speed to pass the lines and quickly analyze whether I should pass, dribble or cross. Those few seconds of decision making are very critical and I really enjoy experiencing this excitement and adrenaline.
Modern full-backs are expected to be everywhere. Defending, overlapping, crossing the ball, even scoring goals. Which part do you like most in this role, which part challenges you the most?
What excites me most about the modern full-back position is its dynamism and versatility. I really like taking part in attacking action, making overlapping runs and creating goal opportunities. But the biggest challenge is to strike the right balance between offensive and defensive duties, knowing when to step forward and when to stay back, requiring constant focus and tactical awareness.
Your teammates call you “Šećer”! How did this nickname come about—does it reflect his off-the-field personality?
Ah yes, “Šećer” dates back to my primary school years. I was always smiling, cheerful and maybe a little too sweet! (laughs) This nickname definitely fits my off-field personality. Wherever I go, I try to spread positivity, laughter and good vibes, so we can say that the choice my teammates made was a good one!
Football is full of rivalries and one-on-one battles. Who is the toughest winger you have ever faced and what did that experience teach you?
When I think of the toughest winger, the game against Finland immediately comes to mind. His players were incredibly fast and tactically very disciplined. It was a tough struggle but very valuable for my development. From that match; I learned the importance of forethought, correct positioning, and staying calm under pressure.
When fans watch the game, they usually see the final moves, but you do much more than that on the field. What is something people often don't realize about your role on the right?
The complexity behind successful wing action is often overlooked. As a right-back or right winger, I am in constant communication with my teammates, monitoring my defensive responsibilities, creating space for other players and monitoring opponent movements. This role involves the behind-the-scenes tactical discipline and decision-making processes that are vital to the team's overall success.
Do you have a pre-match ritual or a song that gets you ready for the game? Or are you more of the calm, focused type?
I always have a playlist of songs that motivate me. Music helps me focus, boosts my energy and prepares me mentally for the game. You may find me quietly listening to music on headphones before kickoff—my ritual that keeps me calm but also fully charged and ready for the challenge.
Was there a particular coach or tactical advice that completely changed your perspective on your position?
Yes, I received some completely game-changing advice from a coach who emphasized the importance of tactical intelligence over physical attributes. It is not enough to be satisfied with just speed and power; It taught me that I needed to learn how to take the right position, timing and make the right decision at the right moment. This awareness radically changed my approach to football.
If a young girl wants to play on the right wing like you, what should she focus on most in her training?
I think the focus should be on developing all-round skills. Dribbling, accurate passes, tactical awareness and physical endurance are very important. Modern football demands versatile players. That's why a young girl who wants to play on the right wing needs to focus on discipline, stability and versatility in her training.
